    Bob Stoops Retiring, effective immediately

    https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/sta...30981378543617

Says it's not because of health....

    Kind of shocking.

Says he expects Lincoln Riley (one-time UK off coordinator candidate correct?) to replace him...

Crazy he was the longest tenured coach in CFB....

Bob Stoops, saying "the timing is perfect to hand over the reins," exits as the Sooners' all-time winningest coach, with a 190-48 record. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley replaces him.

Shocking from the standpoint of when he decided to retire. Eighteen years is a long time in this age for a head coach at a major program like Oklahoma. It has to take a lot out of you. I guess he couldn't face the grind of another season. Probably too, the Joe Mixon situation really took a lot out of him.

Kirk Ferentz at Iowa is now the longest. Who would have guessed that? He was one day behind Stoops.

I guess Snyder at Kansas St. doesn't count because he's in his 2nd stint?

I guess so. Combine the two stints and he is easily the leader in tenure.

I think it is odd that he stepped down at this point of time, instead of at the end of a season. When they give no reason, it leaves the public to speculate on the reason(s) why.

Most people point to his Dad dying at 54 (Stoops is 56) as the biggest reason. Says he wants to live life with his family and it was just time. After 18 yrs at a big time program, I can understand that.

I think he may have done it this way to force the issue with Riley. No chance for the school to go looking for somebody else at this point in time.

I found this that may explain his stepping down. I wanted to share with those who haven't read it. https://www.seccountry.com/sec/bob-s...llege-football

I believe he is staying on in a consulting capacity of some sort. Seems like he is leaving with everything in placed for minimum disruption and a successful Fall.

Didn't Jeff Badet transfer to Oklahoma to play for Stoops

                          He did.

Badet is still safe, because they promoted the OC to head cosch. I would think that player transferred to play for the offensive system of the OC and thinking he would get more action from the QB of the Sooners, than from UK's returning QB. Just my guess.

He likely has all the money he'll ever need - I'd be tempted to retire too. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a TV studio or broadcast booth in a year or two.
