    Next Season's New Starters

It's never too early to talk about next season. I know on offense we lose Timmons, Toth, and maybe Boom. Which starters are we losing on defense?

Will Drake replace Toth and start as a RS Freshman? Or will it go to Stallings and move Drake to guard?

Who will be the new starting WR? Obviously Johnson and Badet but will the third be Baker, Richardson, Ross, or who?

Running back is a lock for Snell and I think King will be a nice change of pace.

    What about on defense?

I think Drake starts at center. Baker will start but I think their will be a lot of guys getting time at WR. I think we see another RB move to #2. I wonder about King's durability and ball security.

This is the time of the year when I am VERY eager to hear about the guys who are redshirting. I think very few of us -- maybe RV -- know how they are doing.

One would think Drake would be a candidate for the center position, but we do not really know how he has developed during his redshirt year.
I am not the least bit concerned about the WR position. We are deeper than the ocean at WR and somebody will step up.
I think it has been very clear over the past few years that we need to be at least 3 deep at RB. It would be nice if King could step up. Despite his smallish stature, I do not recall ball security ever being a problem with him. And, I am very curious to see how our other Freshman RB -- is it AJ Rose?? -- has developed over the course of his redshirt year.
One guy I completely forgot about until a couple of days ago is Tate Leavitt. I think we ALL had him penciled in to start at LT this year. It would be great if he has worked out his issues during the redshirt year, as he certainly has the size to be a factor.

There are several other guys who are redshirting that could be contributors. And, while it is WAY premature at this point -- I wonder which, if any, of the incoming freshmen may contribute next year.

As we keep getting these "good" classes, and redshirting LOTS of the new guys, PT for incoming FR is going to get scarce. I was looking at the 2017 commits and guys we're still chasing, and IMO, maybe 5 will crack the two deep. 17 or 18 guys, maybe more, from the next class will RS. Our 2020, 2021, and 2022 teams are going to be loaded if the program's momentum continues.

Please note that it's likely that not all listed will be on the team next fall - for whatever reason. Attrition occurs on a regular basis but here's how we should/could be going into spring camp. As noted above, it will be difficult for any Frosh newcomer to crash the two deep chart next fall. As you can see, I have no clue where Luke Fortner will settle as he can play anywhere along the entire O-line. I fully expect Bunchy to take over the center position and the RG to be a fight between Big George and Tate.

RV, you don't think Drake Jackson will see any time at guard if he doesn't play center? I thought he had a reputation of being able to play the three inside positions but I could be wrong.

Drake played guard in high school but in that situation he was always one of the biggest kids on the field and now he finds himself as one of the smallest. He doesn't have long arms and I'm of the opinion he's only suited to center in college so we'll see how it turns out. He's going to have to be pretty good to displace any of our projected returning starters.

I was just thinking this. Two of our most highly touted recruits ever with Drake and Landon are coming off the bench.

Football is preparations for future seasons more than any other sport. I like it that we can see the foundation being laid. It was going to take CMS a few years to get here, and here we are. IMO, we couldn't have asked for a better outline.
