Was watching a news broadcast today and when the reporter thanked the person she interviewed, he reponded with "Thanks". Even worse is thanking a person and not even being acknowledged at all. I find myself saying "You're welcome" sometimes when I am not even thanked for doing something such as getting a door for someone. A "Thank you" in reponse to a "Thank you" is a major peeve of mine. So where did the acknowledgement go? I think the majority of folks don't even realize they are doing it. Somewhere along the line it just became a conditioned response.

I hold doors for people a lot, usually because I walk faster than the rest of my family--wife's a talker--and am out the door before the rest of the crew.
It galls me when people say nothing. They just walk through and don't even acknowledge you're standing there. Argh.
Usually people on the news say "Thanks for having me," so that may be where the "thanks" came in from Blue Heaven's example. One odd habit I've heard with radio news the last three or four years is the word "so." The person being interviewed will be asked a question and she/he will begin, "So..." and erupt into this long explanation of the issue at hand.
It's undoubtedly a habit that's been cultivated from listening to others do it, but it's weird.Comment

It's amazing how much difference location makes as far as how people respond. We just spent a week in southern KY/ Tenn on vacation. The wife and I both noticed a big difference in how polite people were. Thank you and you'r welcome were common as well as ma'am and sir. Southern hospitality does truly exist.Comment

I mean when you thank someone and instead of the traditional "you're welcome" in return, they say "thanks" back. Really strange and it galls me.Isaiah 5:20Comment

Being polite and thoughtful is waning fast in our culture. I still open the car door for my wife, and all doors if I can catch her.John 3:3

Go to Paris or Berlin. You might find where ever you are in the states much more polite when you get back.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... I view "no problem" in the same light of the old standby "don't mention it".Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

I say "Thank You", but I'm told it sounds like a garbled "thankee 'er". Thankfully for me and the enunciation Police, meanings can be conveyed without a particular standard of verbiage. Some Thank You's are said without words, and some bleep you's are as well
We work in KY, WV, and Ohio now, and this morning (I think---I'm on night shift at the moment) commented that I did not seem to have a particular accent. I think that she cannot be trustedComment
