    The Parklands of Floyds Fork

Broad Run Park is finally open and is the last of the Parklands of Floyds Fork projects. We visited Saturday noon, walking about 3 miles. The city has spent a significant amount of money (largely private donations with about 40 million coming from federal, state and local government). It's possible to hike from Bardstown Road to Shelbyville Road, although a 4 mph pace still results in about a 4.5 to 5 hour hike.

Visit The Parklands of Floyds Fork — over 4,000-acres of visitor-and-donor supported public park, open every day from dawn until dusk.

We went last weekend. Very nice.

Couple of weeks ago we walked the Paw Paw Trail, which is part of Turkey Run Park. Thought we were in for a leisurely stroll--the sign said about 2.5 miles there, and it looked like it would be quicker back if you stayed on the Louisville Loop section--but because you're walking at a slight incline it's not an easy walk. We ended up going about 6 miles total and were worn down by the end.

I probably like the one on Taylorsville Road the best simply because of the lay-out.

This would be Pope Lick Park.

We haven't found a "great" trail yet--these are parks, after all, and you always feel connected to civilization--but I quite like the one that goes out under the Pope Lick trestle.

Spectacular park Surveyor, as is all the parks in the system. We went Saturday and walked 2 miles and it was packed. When the crowds die down I am going to try fishing the creek. I cannot wait for Fall there. Should be able to take some great photos. I am glad we have something like that so close to us. Louisville already had the largest urban forest in Jefferson Memorial. This park system adds more beauty to the city. Though I don't live there anymore, I am happy that the city toes the line on the small town/big city amenity vibe. It's the best of both worlds.

I believe they had access there closed over the weekend because an out of towner got hit by a train on the tressel.

            Read about that.

It sounds like a Stand by Me situation that went horribly wrong.

Whenever I hear of a situation that resembles that, I think of that movie.

Saw half a dozen people fishing Saturday. I'd like to canoe down from Beckley Creek Park when the water is up a bit.

It appears you can bring your own tent and stay for the day. The city had a trailer out there near south side of the creek that they were renting tents out of, if you didn't have your own.

One thing I think will be an issue is there's a lot of dogs and no poo-bag stations. Bernheim Forest has a number of these along the lowland trails.

A few years ago, my wife's company held their annual company dinner at Beckley Station Park. The facilities for meetings, receptions, etc. were very nice.

^ Also had a bike rental kiosk, I noticed.

I much prefer hiking, but wouldn't mind trying to bike from one park to another one day...assuming you can drop the bike off at one of the other parks. Broad Run is the only place I've seen those kiosks operating, though I'd say they have something similar near the Egg Lawn.

Camping is not allowed. That was a private event-at least the sign said so. If camping was allowed, they would have a host of problems on their hands. We took our dog and was gonna walk in the playground but we're met with a "no dogs allowed beyond this point "sign. We abided, but there were a lot of dogs in there. Just further proof that man can at times be ignorant and non-compliant. We always take our own plastic bags when we walk her. Nothing worse than letting other dogs crappie all over the place. Some people just don't give a damn. I wonder what other rules they snub their noses too?

The first time I went to the Egg Lawn I mistakenly took my dog into the playground. Nobody said anything, and I only saw the sign when I came out.

When we went to Broad Run I knew not to do it, but it's easy to just miss the sign on that low fence.

Just saw that the people who died on the Pope Lick bridge were hunting the Pope Lick Goat Boy.

They came down to do a trip to Waverly, heard about the monster, decided to run over to Taylorsville Road to check it out. What a tragedy.

Now there's going to undoubtedly be a new myth, which is admittedly kind of creepy because my family and I are there once every couple of weeks during the warm months.

I figured overnight camping wasn't allowed, but it's apparent they allow day use on a limited basis. Bernheim used to allow camping years ago until someone turned up dead of natural causes one time.

Yeah, I used to take my dogs to Bernheim quite a bit and took my own bags. Annoyed the hell out of me the number of people who wouldn't clean up after their dogs - particularly in the area where all the Holly trees are.
