    RIP Earl Hamner The Waltons

Earl Hamner passed away at the age of 92. He was the creator of The Walton's television series that was on CBS for about a decade. He narrated the opening of the shows. The character of John Boy was based on him. He also wrote many, many other books, articles and TV shows. Spencer's Mountain is considered one of his best. He also wrote a couple of Twilight Zone episodes.
One of my favorites of his was the TV movie, The Homecoming on which The Walton's series was based on. I still watch this every Christmas season. My parents always said that this show and The Walton's series reminded them very much of their own upbringing.

Watched the Waltons and Little House growing up. I like the simpler times. The Waltons ingrained itself into society more than people know. If you know a fella named John, as I do, how often to you call him John Boy? Where you think that came from?

The first 4-5 years were my favorite.

I had a crush on Judy Norton Taylor and a smaller crush on Michael Learned.

I never cared much for Learned as the mother. I don't why but I thought they could have found someone better.

In case you didn't know, Judy Norton Taylor did some pictures for Playboy after her days on The Waltons. There goes Surveyor off to Google images......................

Already seen `em when I had a subscription. Almost didn't notice her due to the astounding articles.

As good as the series was, "The Homecoming" is still my favorite. I'm surprised it's never on around the Thanksgiving - Christmas holidays, or I just miss seeing it.

A couple of the religous channels show it. I think one them is the UP Network. I have a DVD so I just play that one. Patricia Neal was great in The Homecoming. I guess she was the one that ruined me on Michael Learned.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to see if we get that channel and look for it on similar channels.

Patricia Neal and Duggan were great. The movie reminded me of my paternal grandparents and other family in Grayson County, except they weren't as well off as the Waltons, comparatively.

Richard Thomas Sr. (Harry, right?) lived near us, and I remember well John Boy himself riding a horse down what used to be "our road" at Jennys Creek. This was before the creation of US 23 which impacted many families living along that tributary to Paint Lick.

Where was that in relation to Blockhouse Bottom, now the Prestonsburg-Paintsville Airfield? I'm probably all turned around, but I guess Jenny's Creek must be somewhere near there since it's where she was rescued.

By today's roadways, about 15 minutes. The airport is upriver from this area.

My childhood home sat where US 23 and Route 460 intersect today.

Just wondering. It's where some of my family lived. One of my great grandmothers was born there. Long time ago.

The Waltons was based on Hamners life as a kid. "Hamner Mountain" is in central Virgina near US 29 between Charlottesville and Culpepper. I went to college in the area and passed it many times. The TV show references both towns many times.
