We were out tonight. Main roads good. Our street is good.

Our electricity went off again last evening for about an hour. I'll really be glad when that threat is over. Per TWC there's lots of very cold weather in the two-week forecast though.

Are there any bars open within a 200 mile radius of Louisville??

Here we go again. TWC is saying Corbin could get 1-3 in. of additional snow between now and noon tomorrow. Plus, it's supposed to be brutally cold again this weekend. Spring can't get here soon enough!

I just checked TWC and they're saying less than an in. for us now. It's still going to be bitterly cold this weekend though.

Only thing else I wouldn’t be looking forward to are rain storms with lightning, and wind. I remember how bad those “electrical storms” were back in the day. I guess that was spring.

Winters in Kentucky were so freezing, though. I remember -20 degrees. My dad had to worry about chains on the tires and pipes freezing, I just had to hope we could sled-ride down the hill. Worst part was when the salt/sand trucks came by,for that reason.

Old memories for sure, capcat. I've lived in a five or six mi. radius of Corbin since the early 50's and winters around here used to be a lot worse then than they are now. Ice storms would knock the power out sometimes for weeks. People weren't as dependent on electricity as they are now. We cooked and heated with coal, had a well for water and coal oil lamps for light so we didn't seem to miss it all that much.

I’ve heard the stories… my dad lived in a two story log home built in 1790. No power. No indoor plumbing. My grandmother always had stacks of quilts she’d made. My dad said they made for the best sleep anyone could’ve had. I’ve heard those were worse winters than now, but they did know how to make it through. Plenty of home cured or home canned food and ways to prepare it for a warm supper.

Your dad was spot on. I lived it. We didn't have indoor plumbing either.

It's only supposed to be 25 here today but the sun is shining brightly. Perhaps that will get rid of some of the snow and ice.
