Good travel destinations in Kentucky, or a short drive away?

Do you have any recommendations for places to travel to in the state, or near it?

Any thoughts on Breaks Interstate Park (on the Kentucky - Virginia border), or Big South Fork?

Has anyone visited or eaten at Shakertown recently?

Is there anything new at any of the lakes?

How are the state parks these days?

How crowded does it get when Cumberland Falls may have moonbows?

RRG is always a good suggestion.

Breaks Interstate Park is a really neat place to visit if you happen to be in the area.

I need to get there sometime. Are there many places to stay near it?

It’s pretty isolated but the park itself has a lodge and cabin rentals. Pikeville and Wise/Norton would also offer places to stay.

I grew up in the Big South Fork.

It's kind of hit or miss down there. They finally got the Scenic Railway back up and going, but once you get down into the BSF national park there isn't a ton to see. If you want to stay in my hometown, there's a motor lodge...but it's rough. We once took my son's basketball team (mostly black city kids) down there for a holiday tournament. The coach was pulling into the parking lot of this place and all the boys huddled around him at the front, wide-eyed and scared. One of them saw the place and immediately said, "Turn around, Coach" lol. (They ended up having a blast and loving it.)

Were I to go down to the BSF I'd probably see it from the Tennessee side. They seem to have their stuff together a little better.

And if you want a more urban trip, I always recommend Dublin, Ohio, near Columbus. The most well-manicured place I was ever in. My wife and I go at least once a year and love it. Very swank.
