Brian Wilson, Beach Boys cofounder and 'God Only Knows' genius, dies at 82

Brian Wilson, an eclectic genius whose sunny Beach Boys songs helped define a revved-up era of American popular music, has died at age 82.

Wilson's family announced his death on social media Wednesday, June 11, and did not cite a cause.

"We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now," the post on X read. "Please respect our privacy at this time as our family (is) grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy."

USA TODAY has reached out to Wilson's rep for comment.

As a child, I listened to the Beach Boys Endless Summer record... endlessly. I'll be playing for the kids in the car this weekend.

I have that album on vinyl. If I'm not mistaken it's a gatefold two record album. I prefer songs like "Little Deuce Coupe" and "In My Room" to the surfing songs. Perhaps it's because I never lived near an ocean, but I'm not all that into the surfing songs.

If memory serves, you are right about the two-record thing. I still have my parents' copy somewhere.

I wore out the surfing songs and the car songs. Western KY ocean in my imagination.

Wilson was a musical savant. Pet Sounds is a seminal album that Brian dragged the rest of the group kicking and screaming into his vision of the album.

Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney had said that Pet Sounds was their inspiration/impetus for Seargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Brian was the soul of the Beach Boys and Carl nutured that in Brian's absence.

I'll add this. As good as the Beatles were, George Martin wielded a lot of influence as producer and adding to creativity.

With the Beach Boys, it was predominantly Brian.
