Peter Marshall, ‘Hollywood Squares' Host, Dies at 98

Peter Marshall, Emmy-award winning game show host of “Hollywood Squares,” died of kidney failure Thursday in Encino. He was 98.

His wife Laurie said in a statement that he died at home.

Emmy-nominated 19 times, with five wins, he hosted more than 5,000 episodes of the original version of game show “The Hollywood Squares” and worked as an actor, singer and emcee.

I've got Marshall's book - "Backstage with the Original Hollywood Square". Great read about the earlier days of the show and included a CD of some of the best moments. A lot of Paul Lynde and Charlie Weaver moments.

I’ll bet that’s funny. I guess Nipsey Russell was on it. I’d forgotten about Charlie Weaver.

What a funny show it was. I loved Hollywood Square. I miss a lot of the game shows from back in the day. Waaay back in the day!

I think the highlights on the CD predated Russell's stint. There was a lot of Charlie Weaver, who I barely remember, so it had to be heavy on the early to mid 70s period. Also a fair amount of George Goebel and Wally Cox.

I realized later it would’ve been difficult to incoporate Nipsey’s style. I remember George Goebel, but will have to look up Wally Cox. I’m sure it will come back to me, though. One I remember well was Charles Nelson Reilly, if his was in that era.

Wally was a small fellow who wore glasses. I best remember him as Mr. Peppers on the tv show of the same name.

Wally and Marlon Brando were close friends, which I didn't know until after Wally passed.

I AGREE...this show along with Gene Rayburn on Match Game were the best
