Going to see Alien Covenant tomorrow. I am pretty jazzed up about it. It is getting good reviews but I am tempering expectations considering how much of a mess Prometheus was. I will say though that Prometheus has grown on me after multiple viewings.Isaiah 5:20Comment

Prometheus had a lot of problems narratively, but if taken as a simple monster movie, I thought it was really entertaining. Underrated.Comment

It's not a movie, but if people aren't watching HBO's "The Leftovers," they need to... immediately. It's et three years after a quarter of the world's population mysteriously vanishes in a Rapture-esque fashion.
It's not for everybody, but it is the single most unique show on television today. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. From Damon Lindelof (the oft-criticized show-runner of "Lost"), the show is halfway through it's final season right now. The first season was sort've divisive, as it followed the novel, "The Leftovers," almost to the page. But starting with the second season, the show blossomed into this surreal bouquet of emotional gutpunches and bonkers David Lynchian non-sequitors. It's sad, hilarious, creepy, and baffling, almost all at once.
Watch. This. Show. And if the first season is a little too heavy for you, I implore you to keep pushing. It pays off in ways you'll never expect.

I was really disappointed with Prometheus because it was so much different than what I hoped/expected it to be. I thought we were getting a complex origin story that focused purely on discovery and answers to big, existential questions, but that thread quickly unraveled and frayed into another action/horror movie. Like you said, when taken as such, it's fine - much better than some of the more recent franchise entries - but when I sat down to watch it the first time, I wasn't looking for an action movie.
Now, knowing what to expect from the new one, I'm fired up to see it. I think the original Alien is one of the all-time great horror/suspense films, so I'm always excited to see a promising new entry.Comment

Out of the mainstream selections, I'd give the nod to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That movie's effin' freaky.Comment

I'm going to go with the sequel on this one, too. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is one of the most underrated horror/comedy mash-ups of all time. Completely different in tone than the original, and utterly ridiculous and over-the-top, it is a balls-to-the-wall of orgy of bad dialogue, great set design, and gore. Plus it stars Dennis Hopper at the height of his cocaine-fueled 80s badassery playing a Texas cop named Lefty.Comment

And I never said "TCM2" was a better movie than the original -- obviously it's not. I just said I preferred it more, because it was more purely entertaining. Same as "Aliens." Not a better movie than the original "Alien," but more entertaining.Comment
