Be careful about making you choice. The question is highest grossing movie. That puts older movies at a disadvantage as tickets where much cheaper year ago than now. I consulted the IMDB who maintains two list, one is dollars and another where revenue is adjusted for inflation. I was surprised by the dollar leader but picked the inflation adjusted movie.

True, but there's listings that adjust for inflation and many of the older movies hold up quite well. Gone With the Wind comes to mind.

Jaws- Has to be on here because it literally scared the hell out of anyone who was around during that time. And it still does. Because of this movie I WILL NOT swim in the ocean. If it gets to my waist im outta there!

I think Frozen upended Avatar as the #1 movie. Assuming this article is right, it has Avatar at #2 and Frozen at #1.
