Phil Spector: Grammy-winning music producer and convicted murderer dies

Music producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector died of natural causes on Saturday at the age of 80, according to a statement released by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

An official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner for San Joaquin County.

Spector was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison in 2009 for the 2003 fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson. The actress was found slumped over in a chair at Spector's California mansion with a gunshot wound through the roof of her mouth.

Specter's production of the Beatles' "Let It Be" album was criticized by Paul McCartney, largely for what he did to "The Long and Winding Road". McCartney intended for it to be a simple piece with only the piano and had no say in the final product. George Martin was more critical. Martin did not have production credit on the album and remarked the credits should have listed as produced by George Martin and overproduced by Phil Specter.
Lennon supported Specter's efforts, saying that he had a lot of shitty music to work with and try to make it sound good.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

In a quarrel over Beatles, I'm always going to side with Martin and McCartney.
