    Things That Stump You

In another thread someone mentioned that the idea that time moves slower when you're in outer space is a tricky thing to understand. It is definitely a weird thing to grasp. What are some things you can't quite wrap your brain around? I don't understand how someone with an accent, like Adele or Keith Urban, begin to sing and their accent is gone. Also, although I understand the science, it still baffles me that when I'm in a vehicle driving 65 mph I can throw something in the air and it doesn't shoot to the back like I'm leaving it behind.

Rub your eyes and then close them. Maybe it's our electric currents in our body? You "see" some weird stuff when you do that. Has stumped me for years. Or when you hold a pencil horizontally and shake it. Looks like rubber.

I had the latter phenomenon taught in science class in 8th grade - it only makes sense if you keep in mind that that object you are throwing in the air is also traveling at 65 mph.

I still can't understand why electricity doesn't run out of the wall plug and onto the floor.

Yeah, but to me as soon as you toss it in the air it should start slowing down and go towards the back. In the time it takes to go up and down the only thing acting on it is gravity.

Surveyors quip about Matt’s Australia pictures make me realize I used to not understand why people in the Southern Hemisphere weren’t upside down all the time.

Mind boggling that water circles the drain in the opposite direction.

I've always tried to find someone who has a turn signal at the exact same pace as mine. For years I've checked at every red light. I don't think there's one out there.

Funny how it will sync up for a few seconds then suddenly it's all out of whack. Take away alot of the BS and life is just like one big Seinfeld episode.

The twin paradox, Einstein's clocks, and just about everything in special relativity (mainly time dilation) hurts my brain.

Trying to find a reasonable explanation of what was meant by the "Universe being flat" drove me crazy too. (now it might not be...)

Coriolis effect. Also affects storm systems in each hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere rotation for high and low pressure systems is opposite that of the northern hemisphere.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

I know this isn't what you meant but I do not understand people who believe the earth is flat.

Kyrie Irving being the most famous. I wonder what happens when the hollow earth people get in the same room with the flat earth people?

The flat Universe thing is beyond me to explain without screwing it up. It has to do with our understanding of the "geometric shape of the universe" from measuring the cosmic microwave background.

I don't understand how an explosion in a vacuum wouldn't be a sphere or how it could be "flat".

I don't understand how two rivers in Alaska flow South, as most rivers do. But then their flow changes and both rivers flow North, The rivers are the Nenana and the Delta rivers.

The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River flows northward from Oneida Tennessee into Kentucky. That's a fantastic float, btw.
