Tom Petty on the perfect cup of coffee

The google pocket algorithm set this one my way... It was right up my alley and something I thought I'd pass along. I don't know that I liked any Tom Petty song more than a half dozen other rock songs from my youth by other groups, but I loved Tom Petty the artist more than any other I can think of at every point along the way.

A year after Petty's death, author Warren Zanes shares a tale of loss, memory, and the search for the perfect cup of coffee

It took awhile for Petty to grow on my growing up. I didn't really start listening to his music until the early 80s - senior year in high school. "American Girl" deserved a whole lot better on the charts than its reception indicated. Nada - zip when it was first released. The re-release in the early 90s was not much better chart wise, but a hell of a song.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

I agree with Spirit's thoughts on Petty. I don't know that any of his songs were outstanding to me but when you look at the totality of his collection it stands up to anyone's.

I have no idea what a google pocket algorithm is, but I loved the article. Petty found beauty in something amazingly simple....a cup of coffee. But his music was beautiful and simple as well. Basic garage type rock and roll but with a heavy dose of passion. People could easily relate and did. I LOVED The Heartbreakers. One of the best back up bands ever IMHO.

I like a dozen "not really hits" Petty songs about as much as I like anything but I would never have said he was my favorite. Though of all the stuff I listened to in college or as a teen Petty has aged about as well as anyone and when I think wistfully of college days, Petty, more often than not is what I hear.

I’m in a temporary state of burnout thanks to the Tom Petty Radio on XM. However, huge fan. “I should have known it” from the mojo album was awesome too.

Petty was awesome. I remember first seeing him on SNL back in the day singing “Refugee”. Fell in love right there.

"Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee" are my two Petty favorites.

I was camping with the Fam at Holiday World when I heard the news that he died. Immediately started playing every Petty song I had on my iPod.

I should also note that I saw them in Rupp on the Dogs get wings tour. Best rock concert I’ve ever been to. They were pros. (Honorable mention Smashing pumpkins Carbondale IL 1993)

REM came to Rupp... sucked. Mailed it in.

Tom Petty's concert from Floridas Swamp gets regular play on AXSTV. Great show. I can only imagine what it woulda been like to have been there. I was even a huge Traveling Wilbury's fan.

Speaking of the Traveling Wilburys, this video was made and released after Roy Orbison's death. Note the pic of Roy and the guitar in the rocking chair is his. This is my favorite TW song.

Sadly the Wilbury's are down 60%...
