Hi all: we recently went from sat to streaming tv. Since doing so, we're experiencing problems, for example, if we have a tv and a pc and/or tablet on at the same time. The tv spends a lot of time buffering. Based on what I've read, this seems to be a internet speed issue. If so, what is the best way to increase internet speed (ISP upgrade, we presently have DSL through AT&T, WIFI router upgrade or both). We have an older NETGEAR WIFI router that was serving us quite well until we went to streaming tv. By the way, NETGEAR has some new routers out that are very futuristic looking. Thanks to any and all who reply.

Matt, you can upgrade your router if it is old. You can also buy wifi extenders. From what I have heard they are awesome. It seems to work for those with bigger homes. We just have a single story and the router is not far from the living room.Isaiah 5:20 -
Mesh WiFi extenders can help, but honestly if you have DSL that is likely your problem. If you can do an ISP upgrade, I'd go that route. We pay $65/month for 200 megabits from Spectrum and it's plenty.👍 2Comment

Update to the continuing saga. Since our router is pretty old, and one of NETGEAR's smaller one's, we decided to upgrade our router before upgrading the ISP. We purchased one of the new NETGEAR Nighthawk's. I believe it is one of the most powerful one's they make. When we got it, we had to call and get a techie to help us get it set up. He took control of our pc, and a bunch of stuff came up on the screen. He circled the first five or six things and said they were foreign intruders that were blocking the setting up of the router. He said this was because we had not being doing our security updates down through the years. This is true, we haven't been doing the updates. He said for $169.99 we can get lifetime tech assistance or one time assistance in getting setup for $129.99. Is this legit? We feel like the setup assistance should be free.Philippians 4:11-4:13Comment

Man, I am not so sure about that. Not that he can't help you. He probably can. But maybe this is something you can do yourself. I have changed routers in the past and never needed any assistance but I always automatically update anyway. You are getting out of the scope of my abilities I am afraid. I would hate to dispense advice and it make your situation worse. I would send Sean a pm maybe?Isaiah 5:20Comment

If anyone ever needs tech advise or help on anything feel free to message me here or email me at sean.e.adams AT gmail.com.
Scammers are very smart these days. I would say this tech support person had Matt run a command called 'netstat' which shows connections through you IPtables and out to the internet. They like to use this to point to 'established' connections and claim they are hackers or foreign connections. I will provide support to any of our WCN family free of charge so don't hesitate.Comment
