Legendary College Football Announcer Keith Jackson Dies

Legendary college football announcer Keith Jackson died Friday night, reportsSam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.

    He was 89 years old.
Jackson was considered by many to be "the voice" of college football, broadcasting the sport for 50 years. While he's most known for his college football coverage, he covered the NFL, MLB the NBA, boxing, auto racing, golf and the Olympics. He also covered the 1964 Republican National Convention with legend Walter Cronkite.

I guess Keith was the last of the old timers. The rest have either retired and/or died.

I realize he was old... Man I loved listening to him call games. This makes me really sad.

Keith Jackson was the voice of college football. He did many other sports but he did college football better than any. You could tell he really loved it and was very knowledgable. If Jackson was doing the game you knew it was a big game. He had been retired for over ten years and pretty much stayed away from the game. He was on a game, maybe it was last years Rose Bowl and I didn't know who he was. His voice had really diminished and didn't look like himself at all. So he must have had some very health problems. RIP Keith Jackson.

It depends on how far back you go. Al Michaels and Bob Costas were around when I was very young and both are still going strong. Also there a few baseball announcers that go back to my youth such as Marty Brennaman,Bob Uecker and Ken Harrelson. But yes there aren't many around now that go back 40 years or so.

You can also put Dick Vitale in that group. He has been doing game since 1979 on ESPN.

My first recollection of any announcer was Claude Sullivan doing UK fb. On the national scene it was Vin Scully as I was a Dodger fan when I followed MLB. Some other early ones I remember were Tom Brookshire and Pat Summerall.

              Ones I remember...
Jack Buck, John Ward, Harry Carrey, Keith Jackson,
The original Monday Night Football Crew.
Cawood......lol....sometimes I would turn the TV COMPLETELY off because he made the game look better in my mind.
Scully, Garagiola. Lolololol....Bob Ueker with Juuuuuuuust a bit outside.

All these guys helped make the games.

Man o man, LOVED watching a Keith Jackson-called football game on a crisp fall day in November. Bowl games covered by Jackson were an extra special treat.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

Didn't he do games with Pat Haden? Wow what a voice for college football. Back in the day, THE conference was the Big 8 and Keith did all the big games. It seems he mostly did Big 8, Pac 10, and SEC.

Yes, Haden did for a short time. Jackson had a lot of analyst over the years. Some I remember are Ara Parsegian (sp?) Frank Broyles and Bob Griese. I'm sure there were a lot more too.

I remember Jackson doing a lot of those Ohio State/Michigan games too. Also the Nebraska/Oklahoma games were big ones he did almost every year. Usually those two games fell on back to back weekends at the end of November. He usually did ABC's big game of the week wherever that took him though.
