    Cold Weather

I hope everyone, and your pets, is warm this morning. I live on the outskirts of Corbin, and both the Intellicast and Weather Channel websites showed we had an overnight low of 0 this morning. It's supposed to be brutally cold all week with some warmer weather on tap for next week.

It was 8 in Loudoun County Virginia this morning. Thankfully the wind wasn't blowing hard or it would have a more brutal walk to the bus stop. It's forecasted to be only in the teens for highs on Friday and Saturday this week. But it does look like we will dodge a snowstorm as it is expected to stay offshore.

Our power was out from 4:15 am to 5:50 am this morning. The first time it has been out for any duration since the ice storm several years ago.

We live near the weather warning station so power is fed from multiple directions, ensuring (theoretically) that the station (and indirectly, everyone around it) has power at all times. This outage was likely due to circuit overload with most people having electric heat. We have gas, but no blower power means no heat.

I would love to have gas heat - it's one of the few things I don't like about my house, and I can't really change it. I haven't lived in a house without it since my apartment in my post-college days. It's so much more efficient and inexpensive than electric, which I feel like never really warms up my house.

Alas, my house was built in the 70's and none of the houses in my neighborhood have a gas hookup. I like cold weather and snow - having good winter clothing is a must - but negative temperatures are more than I want.

When the weather forecast indicated single digit temps, I was worried we'd have another watermain break on the main at the highway in front of our subdivision. The main is old and has had nearly a dozen breaks in a 1 mile stretch over the past 5 years.

Heading to work this morning I noticed a column of steam coming from the ground in the vicinity of the main, and the vegetation around it was white with frost. I contacted the water company and they are checking it out. I suspect I'll be boiling water when I get home.

I work outside. It can be brutal out there at night on the ramp. This is nothing compared to December of 1989. There was about a week and a half stretch of below zero temps with wind chills 35+ below zero. Didn't take me very long to have a real respect for the weather. I don't skimp on outdoor clothing and footwear. My style of Carharrt bibs they don't make anymore. I have had them for about 12 years now so I hope to get a few more years out of them. I really feel for the homeless in weather like this.

That's when I'll get my outside lights down.

I was living in Lexington that December of 89. That was the coldest I have ever been. One night the TV weather was saying it was 40 below with the wind chill factor. Needless to say my car wouldn't start the next morning. My dad was coming up for the UKIT and got me boosted off and got me a new battery. Even with living in Northern Virginia for 27 years I have never been as cold as that December.

When it's this cold it's hard for my lungs to process the air. I feel like I'm under water. I have leave that I need to burn so I suspect I'll be "sick" Thursday and Friday. I'll stay home and watch cartoons.

LOL!!! I've already put up two weeks towards D-Day. May add a few more before all is said and done.
