This was inspired by the have a laugh thread. But favorite comedians/stand-ups? I LOVE stand-up comedy. Richard Pryor is one of the GOATs. Anthony Jeselnik is awesome if you can laugh at seriously dark humor.

Couple more things:
I read that Eddie Murphy started working out his Delirious act when he was about 18. The man is an underappreciated genius IMO.
A tremendous book about stand-up comedy: Steve Martin's Born Standing Up. This book won all kind of awards when it was published. It's very short, but it remains one of the most profound things I've ever read about the artist's experience. Seriously, if you have any interest in comedy or how people evolve as artists, read this book. It's incredible.Comment

Bill Hicks, Mitch Hedburg, Louis C.K., Richard Pryor, Maria Bamford, Stephen Wright, Dave Chappelle, Janeane Garofalo, and Dave Attell, to name a few. I like Marc Maron a lot, too, but his standup isn't as good as his podcast work. He's a better scholar of comedy than comedian.Comment

No order..............
James Gregory
Stephen Wright
Don Rickles
Rodney Dangerfield
Jeff Dunham
Jim Gaffigan
Foster Brooks (not a standup comedian, but a true comic)
Eddie Murphy
Norm MacDonald (not everyone's cup of tea)
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

Most of the ones I liked are now dead. I don't know who of the curtain generation is popular now. Here are few I liked over the years in no particular order:
George Carlin
Steve Martin
Don Rickles
Rodney Dangerfield
Bill Cosby I don't think I could ever stand to watch anything of him now because of things he did off stage.
Johnny Carson, Although he was mainly a talk show host he did stand up as well and his nightly monologue is a walk through history of his times when you watch re-runs of his show. He also gave many young stand up guys and gals a chance on his show.
Foster Brooks as Surveyor said not a stand up guy but very funny in what he did.
Bob Newhart and telephone routines were a classic.
Robin Williams, but his stuff was so wild it got tiresome after a while.
Jonathan Winters Not sure he really did stand up but he was awfully funny just going off the cuff.Kentucky fan since 1971.Comment

I like most, if not all, of the aforementioned comics. One I will add that I didn't see: Kevin Hart. You really need to see his Laugh At My Pain. Gut bustingly funny.Isaiah 5:20Comment

It's ironic that you should mention Kevin and Laugh At My Pain.

Titus is a comedian that you listen to and you have no idea how he became famous. Not funny as much as just uncomfortable.
Sam Kinison gets into that realm a little bit. I also think Louis C.K. is a comedian that tends to be more cringe-worthy than funny.Comment

Speaking of comedians named Louis..... Louis Black is a very funny comedian I neglected to list.Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

The funniest live stand-up I've ever seen was at Comedy Caravan. Ben Gleib. One of the smartest comedians I've ever seen.Comment
