Music that aged well for you

Inspired by this post in the LinknPark suicide thread:

I wanted to start a thread about music or albums that have stood the test of time for you. So much of what I listened to in high school and college is, at best, uninteresting to me now, but every now and then I come across a few gems that stand the test of time.

What music has aged well over the corse of your life? Do you feel differently about it now? What do you think kept it fresh? I get that there is a ton of hit music that is considered "timeless" or "classic" but that doesn't mean that it is timeless for you? What has stuck with you?

    ----

Just the other day I was commenting that The Best of Blondie has remaned fresh and musically interesting to me. I listend to Blondie when I was six (brother's record), I I bought the tape in middle school, I bought the CD in high school, and now it's on my iTunes.

    -Nirvana's Nevermind is still great
-Radiohead OK Computer is still a classic
-John Mayer's Continuum is still a great album. His guitar work is other worldly
-Jason Isbell's Southeastern - this album is only 4 years old but I can still listen to it and love it every bit as much as the first time I heard it.

      In no order:

Sgt. Pepper.....The Beatles(50 years old and still sounds fantastic because it IS fantastic)
Who's Next....The Who(Pete Townsend and his mates at their very, very best)
Dark Side of the Moon.....Pink Floyd(The first narco rock album to go commercial in a big way. Classic.)
Kind of Blue.....Miles Davis(Traditional jazz at it's very best. Tremendous musicians across the board. In my CD player in my truck as we speak.)
Abraxas......Santana(Blistering guitar work laid on top of incredible latin vibe. LOVED playing my drums to this type of music. VERY busy stuff lol.)
Allman Brothers at Filmore East......Allman Brothers(Somebody name a better live rock album. Amazing chemistry in that group.)
Tapestry......Carole King(50 years old and a real classic. Sold a billion copies over the years.)

The Beatles had already broken up by the time I was listening to music, but Sgt Peppers, The White Album, Revolver............. all hold up extremely well.

The first band I can recall hearing was Three Dog Night in 1971.
        "Naturally"
        "Harmony"
        "Seven Separate Fools"
        These all hold up well.

The Eagles - every damned album holds up well. West Coast Country that evolved into rock-soft rock after Bernie Leadon left.

Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic

I'll get some arguments on this one - Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women and Children First

Title album holds up well. Great party album or just driving down the road blasting the songs on your stereo.

Journey - Infinity, Evolution, Departure and Escape
Of these, Escape probably holds up the best, likely because it was huge leading into the year I graduated from high school

Others that hold up extremely well that I grew up with:
        Blondie - Best of Blondie
        U2 - War
Queen - Night at the Opera
AC/DC - High Voltage, Dirty Deeds
Fleetwood Mac - Title Album, aguably the best female led band of their day.
Boston - Self Titled Album - the whole album

There's a ton of Billy Joel songs that hold up well, but albums are hard to choose. The more "pop" themed albums while married to Christie Brinkley aren't high on my list, nor is Glass Houses, both of which had a feel of being pushed by the record company.

Bands that became popular back then that I enjoyed but not now:

Loverboy - Self Titled album - two hits, the rest is unforgettable.
Patty Smyth and Scandal - Warrior - loved the album back then, but it's 80s dated.

Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

          Elvis Costello - Spike

This is another one that has really lasted for me, I bought it when I was a freshmen in high school (along with Paul Simon's Graceland on the same day). I like it as much now (if not more than) I did when I got it. It was probably my first "challenging" listen in that I bought it for the catchy Veronica but after a few times through the whole thing ended up liking every other song more.

Interestingly my 16 month old stops and listens every time this is on, even dances a little.

The White Album is my Beatles one that stuck. surveyor I didn't really get interested in Queen until my 30s but they are now in my personal pantheon.

Lot of grunge bands that are timeless that began after my musically formative adolescent - teenage years - Pearl Jam being a great one, too.

I was a teenager in the late 50's and early 60's. The Beatles, especially their early years, is my favorite band although I still enjoy listening to most music (any genre) that was recorded from the mid 50's through the late 70's.

There are plenty of artists and albums that I listened to in high school that I still love today.

The albums that I loved then I still love today, and not in an ironic way.

Hip-hop releases that I listened to religiously as a kid and still listen to all the time today: "Illmatic," "Ready To Die," "Death Certificate," "The Low End Theory," "Midnight Marauders," "The Infamous," "36 Chambers," "The Chronic," "Doggystyle," "All Eyez On Me," "Me Against The World," "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx," "The Score," "Life After Death," "Liquid Swords," "ATLiens," "Aquemini," "The Marshall Mathers LP," "The Eminem Show," etc. etc. Some hip-hop that I liked as a middle schooler/high schooler that aged poorly is all that No Limit/Cash Money stuff from the late 90s. But even as I say that, "Ghetto D" and "400 Degreez" are both awesome albums even today.

Rock albums that I listened to in high school sound just as good today: all of Zep's stuff, all of the Beatles stuff, the grunge/90s rock will always sound awesome to me (Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins), etc.

The only stuff that I listened to back then that aged horrendously is the rock/rap stuff (Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit) and the awful late 90s assembly-line southern rap (No Limit, Cash Money).

When I was in high school, our band booster organization worked at the Derby as a fundraiser - this was in 1999 or 2000. Kid Rock came through my gate with his security entourage laughing it up with everyone.

I hate his music, but he was the nicest dude. Just real friendly to everyone in a way that seemed pretty genuine.

Always heard he's one of the coolest dudes in music, and based on his persona, I'd believe it.

Fun fact: my friend's big brother went to see Whodini/LL Cool J in concert in1988, and guess who was their DJ? Kid Rock, sporting a flattop.

Music that is still fresh that I love:
Old School Hip Hop. Particularly Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim, and EPMD.
The whole alternative/grunge sound. So much better than the crap being pushed today. AIC, STP, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam all still sound great and get regular rotation, especially Pearl Jam. They are my 2nd favorite band. My best ever is Zeppelin. Every song holds up well today, minus a few obscure ones. My third band that is still fresh is Dave Matthews Band. These guys are fantastic musicians and put on a killer show. They are phenomenal live.

Others I like who have stood tbe test of time:
                          Tool
                          Boston
                          Journey
                          Triumph
Classic Country- Merle, Waylon, Hank Jr., Cash, Gosdin, Alabama
                          ZZ Top
                          Rush
                          Allman Brothers
                          Skynyrd
                          Elton John
                          Beatles
                          Doors
                          Queen
                          Pink Floyd
                          Neil Young
Radiohead- OK Computer is a masterpiece
Sublime- particularly 40 ozs to Freedom

Been listening to a lot of WAKY lately. Love those 70's tunes

                            E. 1999 Eternal from BTNH is a top 10 for me, probably top 5. IMO, has aged very well. Nevermind as well.

                              E. 1999 Eternal is one of my all-time favorite albums. A stone-cold classic. No album since sounds anything like it.

Creepin On Ah Come Up, the EP they released prior to E. 1999 is a classic, too. I even enjoyed much of their double LP follow-up "The Art Of War," although like all double albums, it could've easily been trimmed to a single disc.

Big fan of early Bone Thugs-N-Harmony right here.
