Frusciante is one of my favorite guitar players. Kinda the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place.

And have you liked any Radiohead since HTTT? There've been highlights since, but I can't say that I've enjoyed one of their albums front to back since then. These days, all their stuff sounds like the score for bleak documentaries about humanitarian crises.

I agree with this as well. I think when Rolling Stone or Billboard or any other music industry assembles a "best" or "greatest" rock singer, it's wholly and woefully subjective. Countless frontmen aren't necessarily blessed with great pipes, but their singing style fit the band like a glove.

Examples of vocalists who aren't terrific singers but fit perfectly with the band:
        David Lee Roth
        Robert Plant
        Steven Tyler
        Bon Scott and Brian Johnson
        James Hetfield
        Axl Rose
        Bono
        Iggy Pop
        Gregg Allman
        Kurt Cobain................. and countless others.

Who thinks of Bono as an all-time vocalist?

I love the character of his voice paired with his style of music. If we're talking pure vocal ability, that's a different story - as it will be with most lead singers in rock bands.

This all gets back to what is the definition of a great singer. Trying to quantify a singer on vocal ability alone is pointless - except for Getty Lee. There's NO music that nasally quiver of a voice pairs with.

Who among the great or at least highly popular rock bands (I'm now afraid of using the word great to describe any musical talent) was a great vocalist? I understand that Freddie Mercury probably will be the big pick, but who else is there?

I haven't liked a Radiohead album since Kid A, and I thought even that was wildly overrated, save a couple of tracks. What does Jonny Greenwood and the rest of the band do now that their records are a collection of bleeps and bloops?

That's all I've ever heard about Bono. But like Surveyor's saying, it probably has much more to do with everything he does other than singing.

Mebbe Steve Perry. On the female side - easily Ann Wilson.
Daryl Hall - Hall and Oates, but he's as much a solo artist.
                            Brad Delp - Boston

Chris Cornell had an incredible voice.

Elton John, if you call him Rock. Jeff Buckley. I'd put Chris Cornell up there, too. Stevie Nicks.

Elvis? Joe ****************er, maybe, if his band was big enough to count in the conversation. The Eagles weren't great, either, but Don Henley could sing.

Oh, and I know I'll catch some grief for this, but Michael McDonald, if we're only talent pure vocal talent. I don't like his music, but the guy could/can sing.
