So, true story: this thread put me in the mood to mow, and within the first three laps the PTO belt jumped off the middle pulley AGAIN. It isn't hard to fix, but man, what an aggravation.

We bought a Cub Cadet at the Church I do the landscaping at. I don't know what the model is, but it's the largest model of their garden tractors. It has a Kohler engine and we love it. It is drive shaft driven and not belt. We didn't buy a mower deck, so I can't comment on how that part works, but they have an industrial deck that looked very sturdy. We had a Deere, but saved a lot on the Cub.

We have a Husqvarna, and although it is a Zero-Turn model and slightly different than what you are talking about, it has been a good machine so far. I think one thing to keep in mind is that with a lot of these mowers there are several components used across the market.

I would look for something with grease fittings on it and that seems to be "simple". If so, you will likely be able to do most of the maintenance and repairs on it. Keeping the deck clean is paramount, sharpen the blades at least once a season (as needed is better), and keep the oil changed.

Might want to check out the used market as well, as you never know when a good deal might pop up.

As for battery maintainers, those are quite handy. I use one in winter on a sports car and the model is CTEK 3300. It powers off when the battery is charged and cycles as needed to maintain such.

The belt slips off all the time, the pulleys gunk up or lock all together, I've put three new batteries in it because some component in the engine drains them on a regular basis... the list goes on.

Could be that I just have a lemon, but in my experience a Cub Cadet is pure garbage.
I'd say you have a lemon. Granted I never had a CC rider (see what I did there?), but I had an src 621 zero turn/self propelled that I got for free from my Sister and tuned it up and put a new blade on and that thing was BAD A***! I work with 3 guys who have lawn businesses on the side and they swear by Cub Cadet.

So a trickle charger? Those things are great. I keep my Marine deep cycle battery on one when not in use. They are designed to discharge and charge as needed.

Not exactly, there's a difference between the two.

                The difference is smarts.
A trickle charger provides a constant current all the time. It does not know whether the battery is charged or discharged.
A battery tender is smart. It will charge the battery only when it needs charged. After it's done charging it will shut off and monitor the battery state. When it sees the battery get to something like 80% (depends on the tender model) it will charge the battery back up to full and wait again.
Tenders are better but more expensive. Tenders charge the battery only when needed; this reduces the wear and tear on the battery.
Trickle chargers wear on the battery more.

We have a Deere at Valley View too, but when we bought the Cub Cadet we realized how much we payed for the name. Performance is the same with both tractors.

I don't know if this is true, or not, I've never researched it, but a fellow told me that a few companies make the components for all different brands of things such as washers, dryers, etc. and the different companies put their names on the products. I do know the first riding mower I ever bought was also one of the best. It was a 12.5 HP Murray which I purchased at my local Wal-Mart.

MTD makes Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Bolens, and a few others. Basically if it ain't Deere, MTD probably makes it, lol.

I wound up going with the Deere D130 - Lowes was running a special last weekend where you received a $250 gift card (that we'll use shortly with our house) with the purchase of a Deere. I also had a 10% off coupon I received when I changed my address, and some additional credit card cash back rewards that saved me about $600 overall in the long run.

                          It's being delivered Friday.

                            Nice.

I purchased the Deere D105 Memorial Day weekend and got 5% off, and free delivery. The funny thing is when I was purchasing, the Lowe's guy asked what I was replacing. When I told him a Scott's made by Deere that I bought new in `98, he remarked, "Well, you'll be lucky to get anywhere near that out of this one. They don't make them like that anymore". The Lowe's delivery guy said the same thing.

On the contrary, I think I'll get at least the same level of service out of this one. Deere scored high marks in Consumer Reports for reliability.

EDIT: Forgot about the $200 gift card.

Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

I wound up getting a trickle charger and *knock on wood* haven't had any problems since. There's still something wrong, because there's no good reason for a new battery to have been drained as quickly as that one, but as long as I keep it on the charger between uses, the mower fires up every time (so far).

When I originally posted this topic, I had only seen my house/yard twice and I hadn't realized what a slope I had in the backyard. I wanted the extra horse power and the better seat the D130 had. I also looked at Husqvarna and Cub Cadets, but the Husqvarna reviews had a common knock of the transmission going out, and I wanted to use my 10% coupon and Lowes doesn't sell Cub Cadet, only Home Depot.

In any event, you see a lot more older Deere mowers - both of my neighbors have them, than you do other models. I think if I maintain this one well and keep it inside, it'll serve me well.
