Restored Fire Lookout in Washington State

Converted to a through hike layover cabin.

Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

The view is breathtaking, but it's definitely no place for someone like me who suffers from acrophobia.

You and me both brother. As I've gotten older, I certainly have become extremely uncomfortable dealing with heights. Driving over bridges, deer stands, airplanes, you name it. As a matter of fact, several years ago when I went to my doctor for my annual, I told about my growing fear of heights. He said there was nothing wrong with me, I was just getting smarter!!

For years I talked about heading out west and trying to get on as a fire lookout, but I never tried. It's one of those romantic notions of mine, I guess. We all have them.

What we're NOT seeing is how screwed up the view is if it's cloudy/rainy, which in WA state is most of the time.

I'd still happily spend a few nights there.

I HATE ladders or getting on a roof but I have no problem hiking a ridgeline. I used to de-ice those UPS jumbo jets years ago. Had no problem tethering myself to the bucket in those cherry pickers.

I love to hike on a ridgeline or on a cliff, and I also have no issues with most heights. But I hate flying - I'm as nervous a flyer as they come.

I'm normally okay with heights, but the first time I got apprehensive over heights was crawling to the very top of Chimney Tops in the Smokies. After the first jitters successive passes were easier and a lot quicker. Last trip up there was a kid of about 15 or 16 that came crawling by everyone as if we were standing still - right up to the initial peak and on past to the next one.

I wanted to climb Chimney Tops when we were in the Smokeys back in October. We didn't have time and I was worn out from my hike the day before. On that one, we went out to Charlie's Bunion via the Appalachian Trail. I climbed up on the bunion and nearly lost my balance. It was a little jarring, but I'd do it again.

Chimney Tops is still on my list.

I don't have a fear of heights. Having said that, hiking to the top of Half Dome and scaling the last 500 or so feet via hand-held cables will mess with your head.

Some friends did this a few years ago. One said the actual scaling didn't bother him so much as the approach do the cables.

I'd give this a shot but I need to be in much better shape than I am now.

It's not an age thing with me. I've suffered from the condition my entire life.

For those of you who aren't bothered by heights, how would you like to walk out on the Grand Canyon Skywalk?

I would. I've done the thing in the Sears Tower in Chicago too. It's pretty neat.
