Have a friend that swears by a percolator. Will be in the market for a new maker soon. Would love to try a percolator. Need one that can be set the night before to be ready when our feet hit the floor. Time to Google. Yes, we are spoiled.

      Speaking of percolators.

My grandparents lived in rural Grayson County all of their lives. The lived in a 3 room house with no running water until 1972. They always had a percolator, but only used it to boil water for their instant coffee.

It wasn't until I was probably in my early teens that I discovered that a percolator was more than a glorified water heater.

I grew up in a rural area as well. I can't recall seeing anything other than a percolator until I married, the first time, and left home in 1971.

Yeah I have two antique stainless ones that i take camping with me. Been meaning to bring one in the house and try it out.
I might have to try my hand at grinding my own. It just tastes better.

One of the things I miss most about not being able to hunt and fish like I used to, is making a pot of coffee either on/over a camp fire or one of those old Coleman gas stoves. I always used percolators, and if I had a dollar for every time one got used, I'd have a BUNCH of dollars. Not only did it taste great, I used to love lying in bed listening to the noise it made.

The funny thing is about `73 or `74 they got an electric percolator as a Christmas gift - and still used it as a tea pot.

Ah yes Uncle Dave. Those percolators look good on my 1960's Coleman 2 burner. I have a new one I mostly use now but on occasion I will pull out that old Coleman. It strikes up some good conversation. It's the old style with the red tank and primer pump.

Sitting around a campfire and listening to coffee percolate is one of life's simple pleasures, ain't it?

I'll tell ya something, but you have to promise not to tell ANYONE....promise???
My dearly beloved papa got me my first coleman when I was still in high school, back in the early 70's. I used it religiously and couldn't imagine being without one. One day, perhaps 10 years ago, somewhow it got knocked of it's perch and disintegrated into dozens of pieces. It was already in need of some TLC. I was literally heartbroken and looking at what was left literally brought tears to my eyes. I was absolutely crushed, and remained in a serious funk the rest of the time we were there. The next Christmas my friends banded together and got me a new one.....one of those fancy models with propane instead of white gas. It worked great and I still have it, but I'll go to my grave with a soft spot in my heart for the one my pop got me!! And yes, listening to and smelling the aroma of a percolator on a fire is one life's beautiful pleasures.

I'm not sure mom ever used an electric one.
