World War II

[Old School]

I've long enjoyed books and movies about World War II. I watched The Pacific a while back and really liked it. I recently started reading With the Old Breed, by E.B. Sledge, which was part of what The Pacific was based on. Next up I think will be Goodbye, Darkness by William Manchester. After that I may try to find the book written by the person profiled in The Pacific who became a sportswriter (Helmet for My Pillow, I think). I've read more about the war in Europe than in the Pacific and among the books I really enjoyed was Cornelius Ryan's book about the Battle of Berlin.

Is anyone else into this part of history? Any suggestions for further reading or watching?

I like all those WW2 shows on History. Can't get enough of them. Band of Brothers is my favorite movie,series,you name it of all time. A lot of those guys from the series have been dying. It's really sad. My Paw Paw was in the 101st Airborn. We have a lot of things in the Family that was passed down to us that he brought back home. Christopher Nolan has a movie about the war coming out this year. It's called Dunkirk and it looks like it will be really good.

Band of Brothers is the best you can view or read about WWII. Great series and the book by Stephen Ambrose wrote is very good too. Most of those guys after that wrote about their experiences in WWII. Almost all of those books are very good too.
Another series is World at War. It is British made in the early 70's. Sir Lawrence Olivier narrates it. It is a 26 part series. It is very well done and they go over every aspect of the war. It does have a slightly British slant to it. But still it is considered the best documentary of WWII that has been made. I bought it a few years ago and like to go back and watch it all again. I see it is on Amazon Prime right now. So if you have that you can view it for free. Link for it is below.

Also The War made by Ken Burns is good. It is the American take on WWII. It is not as good as World at War but still worth your time to watch it.

I read a lot of WWII memoirs. I find those the best and most enjoyable to read. My dad was in WWII so I have always taken a great interest in it. I have read more on WWII than any other thing from a history standpoint. Sometime soon I am going to start to read the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. It is a mammoth book written about the start of Hitlers rise to his fall by WIlliam Shirer. It is considered the definitive book on Nazi Germany.

If you'd like some fun fiction on WWII in the pacific, I'd recommend the WEB Griffin series The Corp. Emphasis on FICTION but it is a fun read.

The old British world at war series has an episode dedicated to Japan followed by one on the Pacific theater. Excellent documentary work! A little dated, but great!.

That series did have a quite bit on the Pacific. They even had one episode on the China,Burma and India aspect of it. Which is hard to find much info about that at all.
