I thought I might try this. I am by no means an expert and have absolutely no insider information. Just my random thoughts. Since I won't be tailgating, it seems like a good opportunity to do it.
This week I will jot down what I think of the team in general, from the coaches down.
On paper I think we have a decent team. Will will be able to compete with Texas and schools like that absolutely not. I think our final W/L record will be 4-8, maybe 5-7 if we steal a game. In conference, 1-7, maybe 2-6. I just don't see see us being a team capable of beating many SEC schools. I hope I am wrong.
Coaches.
??????This is a make or break year for Stoops. Unless he pulls off a surprise year, this will be his last at UK. I know he has a huge buyout, but the AD will not have much of a choice. Regardless of the year we have Brad White will be gone. I can't help but think he has higher goals than being DC at UK, but he will not reach those goals here.
Calzada will be QB1 for the first week, maybe the first 2 weeks. He has some SEC experience so that should help him. If he slips up or gets inured, Boley will replace him. Fans will be screaming for him to play anyway. I have nothing against him and hope he can play the way people have been saying. I am not convinced. I have seen great KY high school QB's come in and not do very well against SEC defenses. Nothing against them, but they are just not as good as their hype. At a smaller school, these guys would probably do well.
At RB, we do not have a standout like Benny Snell or Chris Rodriguez. We do have some very talented guys. I like Wilcox, he made some great runs last year, but please someone tape his shoes to his feet. Dowdell. has good size and brings some much needed experience. It will be RB by committee.
At WR we have some good young kids, but no one, at least in my mind, who stands out. I think the older guys will need to step up and teach the younger guys
We can have a great QB, RB and WR, but without an O-line doing their job it will be hard. The "big uglies" up front will have to open some holes and give whoever is at QB time to throw the ball or it will be a long season. This is what happens when you play NFL caliber defensive personnel week end and week out.
We lost a bunch on defense and some of the new guys will need to really step up. We always have had a decent secondary, I just wish they would play a little closer to the line of scrimmage.
Well that is what I think. I know some of it sounds bleak, but no matter what, I will always pull for the CATS, no matter how bad things get.
